Une occasion en Or pour rencontrer les artistes : Rébecca Dautremer, Maïlys Vallade, Juanjo Guarnido, Eric Gosselet, François Roca, Dominique Bertail et Gérald Guerlais.

En association avec la librairie Bulles de Salon, les Éditions du Chêne organisent en effet une séance de dédicace collective dans ces lieux prestigieux pour l'ouvrage Sketchtravel. Si des exemplaires standards et de luxe sont disponibles sur place, il est néanmoins possible de venir avec ses exemplaires préalablement achetés. Venez nombreux !

Deluxe et Standard. Explications.

Nous avons le plaisir de vous confirmer qu'en ce jour du 5 octobre 2011, le carnet Sketchtravel est disponible dans toutes les bonnes librairies françaises, sur l'ensemble de l'hexagone, dans sa version "standard". La version "De Luxe" sera disponible le 26 octobre 2011. Nombreux sont ceux qui s'interrogent sur la différence entre les deux versions. La première est à 28 euros, la seconde à 150 euros. Il est légitime de s'interroger sur une telle différence de prix. Explications.
Les éditions du Chêne sont reconnues pour leur niveau d'exigence élevé quand à la qualité d'impressions, la qualité du papier, les finitions maniaques. Cela assoit leur réputation et aucun de leurs ouvrages ne déroge à cette règle. Ainsi, même la version dite "standard" répond à ses critères d'exigences élevés.

Dans la version standard : l'ensemble des contributions commentées par les artistes, les photos des relais, les liens vers les sites des artistes, leurs bios, les avant-propos des organisateurs, des historiens et journalistes Fabien Simode (L'Oeil magazine) qui apporte son éclairage au regard de l'histoire de l'Art, et Charles Salomon, qui en sa qualité de journaliste et historien de l'animation, rappelle le contexte dans lequel l'aventure s'est déroulé et la force symbolique de l'initiative.

Dans la version de Luxe :
-L'ouvrage est reproduit à l'identique. Une mallette avec dorure enveloppe et sacralise définitivement l'objet. Impression avec gaufrage du logo, réplique à l'identique du carnet original (presque à s'y méprendre) livret supplémentaire à part contenant les photos et commentaires et aussi un tiré à part de la contribution de Nicolas de Crécy. Tirage limité à 2000 exemplaires.

Carter Goodrich is an award winning author, book illustrator, New Yorker cover artist, art director, and character designer. He has done character design for Dreamworks and Pixar films, and his recent work on "Despicable Me" was praised across the industry. Carter normally doesn't participate in this type of project, but after we insisted 3 separate times, he agreed. The result: this amazing sketch.

The incredible Greg Couch, Production Designer at Blue Sky Studios, created this gorgeous sketch for the project. He is known for his children's books such as Halloween and Wild Child (all available on Amazon). The way he uses colors and light was a huge inspiration for Dice Tsutsumi in his early career.

One of the Sketchtravel artists, Tadahiro Uesugi from Japan made a beauuuutiful illustration for the official auction event poster. If you know Brussels, where the auction will be held on October 17th, you may recognize this street corner. Yes, indeed. Tadahiro conducted an extensive research using Google Earth to be as accurate to the real street without having to visit as he could. What a professional!

He is one of the most influential illustrators in and outside of Japan.

As you may know, we have recently updated the 1st Sketchtravel's clip with a great english version and a new sound design. The french version stays the same. It was possible thank to the great generosity of two amazing Artists : Nicole Poole and Vincent Guyot.

Nicole Poole is a voiceover artist and actress based in New York City. Serving as the voice for countless U.S. advertising campaigns, Nicole is also an award-winning narrator for audiobooks. A former member of England’s Royal Shakespeare Company, Nicole now combines her love of theatrical and musical performance through Soundpainting, a groundbreaking compositional sign language developed by Walter Thompson. She performs regularly with the world-renowned Walter Thompson Orchestra and Parisian orchestras Anitya and SPOUMJ. Nicole has worked for 15 years to develop the language's use for theater, and is one of the world's experts in her field. She is currently producing a multidisciplinary project based on the works of the late Mike Zwerin, “The Parisian Jazz Chronicles,” to be performed in Paris in 2012. She is honored to be a part of the Sketchtravel project.

Borned in december 1990, Vincent GUIOT started to play classical guitar at 7. He immediately wrote his frist melodies thanks to his music teacher. Always exploring new sounds, his way naturally goes to sound design and musical creation.
Graduates in sound and broadcast ingeneering technologies degree in 2010, he is now studiing classicial composition, jazz and rythm in different conservatories in Paris and musicology. Keep an eye on this young blood and remember his name.

A l'approche de la sortie du livre en librairie le 5 octobre, plusieurs chapitres s'achèvent. Si nous avons souvent communiqué sur les artistes participants, il convient d'honorer comme il se doit
les éminences grises qui opèrent dans l'ombre. Sketchtravel est une aventure plurielle et collective.

Lorsque nous avons lancé le site www.sketchtravel.com, nous avons pu bénéficier du talent et de l'expertise de Sofinotsofar qui avait créé la première version du site.
Cette première version est disponible sur son site, dans la rubrique Webdesign.

La technologie flash n'étant pas supportée par les lecteurs sur Ipad, nous avons fait évolué le site avec le concours de l'agence Actual qui a apporté toute son expertise au service du projet pour garantir une lisibilité du site par le plus grand nombre. Actual, ne s'est pas contenté d'héberger le site internet mais a garanti pendant ces 5 dernières années la stabilité de ce dernier. Nous n'avons ainsi souffert d'aucun piratage, et d'aucune forme de spams, le serveur n'a jamais planté en dépit de pics de fréquentation surprenants et imprévus. Les outils spécifiques d'Actual nous ont permis d'analyser la fréquentation du site et d'ainsi adapter notre communication.
Actual a également mis en place l'enregistrement à l'unique newsletter ainsi qu'un système de messagerie nous permettant de nous adresser à l'ensemble des artistes participants en un seul mail avec un contrôle qualité d'une efficacité redoutable. Lorsque nous avons procédé au vote interne afin de choisir quelle serait l'association caritative la plus appropriée, c'est encore Actual qui nous a offert les outils adéquats avec une rapidité et une flexibilité rare. S'adresser à 71 artistes sur plus de 10 fuseaux horaires, s'assurer qu'ils aient bien lu les mails n'est pas si simple.

Le site de Sketchtravel rentrera bientôt dans une nouvelle phase, orchestrée cette fois-ci par Daisuke Tsutsumi et son équipe californienne. La sortie en 2012 de Sketchtravel aux Etats-Unis répondra à des critères différents de communication et de gestion de projets. Dans l'esprit de la course de relais à laquelle on compare souvent, et à juste titre ce projet, il convient de laisser les premiers coureurs se reposer enfin. Ces cinq dernière années, je n'ai pas ménagé mes deux interlocuteurs de l'équipe Actual : Benjamin Desmet et Bruno Tomalak qui n'ont pas compté leur temps et qui ont répondu à des requêtes à des heures indues et même le week-end :-) Leur investissement n'est pas ordinaire. Je tenais aujourd'hui à rendre hommage à leur professionnalisme, leur qualité d'écoute et leur constante réactivité. Je souhaite à tout ceux qui se lancent dans un projet numérique ou de communication de grande envergure de travailler aux cotés de ces messieurs talentueux. leur agence, basée à Troyes, dans l'Aube n'a rien à envier à nombreuses agences parisiennes.
Un grand merci à Actual, et plus particulièrement à Benjamin Desmet et Bruno Tomalak.

How did you get the sketch book ?

I received the book from Chris Applehans.

-What do you think about this collective project ?

It's lovely to think of us all as a worldwide community able to communicate visually.

-Who did you give you the scketchbook and whom did you give it then ?

After Mr. Applehans I handed the book off to fellow Disney artist (and amazing talent) Lorelay Bove.

-What technique did you use ?

I used a croquill pen for the first time, and watercolor.

-Did you have already and idea of what you would draw in it?

Oh, God, no. Actually I already had the basic idea, but I had no idea how to show it.

-Where you happy, motivated, excited, scared to get that sketchbook in
the hands ? Can you tell us how you felt ?

Naturally I felt honored and flattered to have been included with some of my favorite artists, but also terrified and utterly inadequate to the task.

-Who(in the contributors) would you like to work with in the future ?

Too many to list. Peter de Seve and Carter Goodrich are personal favorites, but they're all just amazing.

-What are your news (signatures, upcoming books, movie or else)?

I was art director on the upcoming Winnie the Pooh movie, opening up in Europe in April and in July in the U.S.!

-How did you get the sketch book ?
I was invited by Dice and Gerald

-What do you think about this collective project?
I think the project is a great way to preserve different talents in different fields of art. I just wish there were more pages for more artist.

-Who did you give you the scketchbook and whom did you give it then ?
I gave my book to Sang Jun Lee and I wasnt exactly sure who he gave it to but I'm sure it was very hard to follow Sang Jun.

-What technique did you use ?
My piece of art was done in Oil paints.

-Did you have already and idea of what you would draw in it ?
I didnt have an idea initially but I was working on a childrens book for Simon and Schuster at the time so I decided to paint the character fro sketchtravel.

-Where you happy, motivated, excited, scared to get that sketchbook in the hands ? Can you tell us how you felt ?
I was one of the few people that had the book early so I did a very simple looking piece. Knowing what it looks like now I wish I can have it back to work on it some more!

-Who (in the contributors) would you like to work with in the future ?
Luckily I have worked with a lot of the artist in the book and to be honest there isn't anyone I can choose solely.

-How did you get the sketch book ?
My friend Daisuke asked me to participate. we worked together at Lucas Learning long ago. so he gave the book to me. and then I met Gerald when i was visiting france after i had done my piece. they are a good team, those two.

-What do you think about this collective project?
I love it! I like that the sketchbook itself becomes an awesome character that travels the world meeting artists. It probably loves having it's pages graced by so many amazing hands. it is fun to see where the book goes and see all the various styles involved.

-Who did you give you the scketchbook and whom did you give it then?
Dice gave it to me and i gave it back to him. it was an average hand off between bros. I think perhaps we were eating curry.

-What technique did you use?
I used a brush pen and pencil. although i wish i had more time to do a full watercolor painting. especially after i started to see how the book developed! it became an amazing full gallery!

-Did you have already and idea of what you would draw in it?
Well, i was into drawing board games at the time and technology through the ages, so that was already in my mind. but the piece itself was a new idea. it was a caveman boardgame... learning technology.

-Where you happy, motivated, excited, scared to get that sketchbook in the hands ? Can you tell us how you felt ?
I felt unbelievably honored to be included. I felt nervous about it for sure. I wanted to make it good to be worthy of living with the rest of the stuff. but i felt super excited looking at the art that came before. that definitely inspired me.

-Who(in the contributors) would you like to work with in the future?
All of them! there were some amazing French illustrators that I would love to meet and work with. especially in the children's book and comic realm.

-What are your news (signatures, upcoming books, movie or else)?
I have an art exhibition in Paris at Galerie Arludik on April 19th. My first children's book Zombie In Love comes out August 2011. My ongoing series GREAT SHOWDOWNS can be found on the web at greatshowdowns.com and my Double Fine Action Comics at http://www.doublefine.com/comics/Scott_C/. My first art book collecting my paintings will come out in the fall from Insight Editions! (the art book hasnt been announced yet.)

Hello everyone

I hope you and your loved ones are safe in the catastrophic disaster in Japan.
The earthquake was the most powerful in the history and the outcome is devastating without showing any sign of calming down.
It took me and my wife to get in touch with our families in Japan. Some of our relatives are still out of reach in the hard hit areas.

Aside from it’s my home country, I would simply want to ask for your help.
As you may know, artists have done numerous charity projects such as Totoro Forest Project, Art Block for Ghana, Picture Book Project, and Sketchtravel.
Artists once again can get together to bring our inspiration together to respond to the immediate needs from far east.

Working with Give2Asia who we worked with for Totoro Forest Project to help preserve Sayama Forest back in 2008, we set up a simple fund called Artists Help Japan.

Artists Help Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fund is responding to the immediate needs of survivors as well as short-term to long-term recovery projects undertaken by the affected communities.
Give2Asia has a local team based in Tokyo to assess the current situation and to obtain more information on the needs of survivors. Give2Asia helped Totoro Forest Project efficiently send fund to Japan and has a great reputation when it comes to humanitarian efforts in Asia as a part of Asian Foundation.

Having worked with them, I can trust the fund will be used wisely and efficiently to help people in Japan.
This may be just a small help we can only provide from far away but I hope our prayers will reach people in Japan.

Sketchtravel team just returned from Burbank, California where the CTN animation Expo took place. We had the pleasure to see and review a large proportion of Sketchtravel's participants
and also other artists who deserved their place in the book.

Thank you to all the early birds who had the courage to join us at 9:30 am for the conference last Sunday. I wish we had more time. I hope the extra time in the Q & A room allowed to answer all questions.
Many artists ask me if the CTN is the equivalent of Annecy festival. Comparison is difficult: the CTN is only two years old when Annecy is 50... I encourage their team to listen to the participating artists so CTN team can improving their organization.
This Californian Tour is an important point for Sketchtravel 's adventure because it brought together for the second time (the first being the Totoro Forest Project) the maximum Sketchtravel participants. Thus, Japanese, French and American artists were able to share all their passion for drawing and animation (and the wine ...) Another important point, not least, the incredibly generous hospitality in the studios of Disney (Thanks Lorelay, Claire and Glen), Sony pictures Animation (Thanks Luc) and Dreamworks where we have even been warmly invited by Kim Mackey and Christopher Lautrette to reiterate our lecture to the luminaries of the art department.

The picture has been taken last saturday evening. Actually we met more Sketchtravel's artists in LA but they weren't available this evening : Dominique Louis, Erik Tiemens, Daniel Lopez Munoz, Carter Goodrich, Chris Appelhans, Robert Kondo.

I'm going to divide this californian story into several sections because this trip is rich in emotion and meetings.

Sketchtravel is fortunate to get super talented couple Le Uyen Pham and Alex Pucilland to participate recently. Many people who worked in the beginning years of Dreamworks, know the ridiculous talents these two showcased back in the days.

Alex still works at Dreamworks as a visual development artist and Le Uyen has become one of the top children's illustrators Today.

Despite the busy schedule of theirs, including taking care of their two beautiful sons, Leo and Adrien, they contributed for this project with such beauuuuutiful pieces. Wow! They are soo good that I have to share a bit of them!! (again, we don't wanna spoil your experience when the book comes out!)

Annecy's festival is truely the best place to meet Artists from Sketchtravel !

Contributor Eric Gosselet and I spent 3 days there, meeting others artists involved in the Sketchtravel's projects and we had a lot of fun !

Contributors Maïlys Vallade Won a Prize (Award for Best Graduation movie with "Lighthouse Keeper") and also Rébecca Dautremer (Special Distinction for "Eleonor's secret") at Annecy's festival 2010.Contributors Robert Valley and Chris Appelhans can be also proud. Indeed : Fantastic Mr Fox get the Christal price for best feature and "Rock Band" get the Advertising or promotional film Award. Contributor Peter de Sève was not only promoting his Artbook but also an incontrovertible member of the Jury. Talented contributor Lorelay Bove had some conferences about her work at Disney. Conributor Bill Plympton was also promoting his movies with gusto.

Meanwhile, Daisuke Tsutsumi is in Japan, promoting Toy Story 3. And so does Robert Kondo.

The Sketchbook will be back soon in the USA for his last round.

Next Artist is Koji MORIMOTO.

Koji Morimoto (born December 26th, 1959) is an animator and one of Japan's premier anime directors. Born in Wakayama, Japan, he graduated from the Osaka School of Design in 1979 and a couple years later joined the studio Annapuru as a grunt animator for the TV series Tomorrow's Joe. While working there, he saw some animation by Takashi Nakamura in Gold Lightan, an otherwise standard mecha TV series by a rival studio. He was blown away, and it inspired him to quit his job and go freelance.
Morimoto quickly became one of the most interesting animators in Japan, often collaborating with Nakamura, most notably in Katsuhiro Otomo's 'The Order to Stop Construction' segment of the anthology film Neo-Tokyo. It was fluid and expressive in ways that are rarely seen in anime, especially in the realm of direct-to-video releases like Neo-Tokyo. This opened lots of doors for him, from working as animation director on Otomo's landmark feature Akira and a chance to direct a short for the Robot Carnival anthology. Around this time he founded Studio 4Â°C with producer Eiko Tanaka and fellow animator Yoshiharu Sato.
Since then, Morimoto has focused almost exclusively on his directing work. His work became increasingly bizarre and full of manic energy. This is best represented by his only animation work in the past fifteen years (the concert scene in Macross Plus) and his infamous short film Noiseman Sound Insect.

Kôji Morimoto has directed movies such as "Genius Party", released in 2007, "Memorîzu"⁽¹⁹⁹⁵⁾, and "Robotto kânibaru"⁽¹⁹⁸⁷⁾.

Le mini-pilote du projet de Sylvain Marc vient de recevoir le prix Pulcinella du festival "Cartoons on the bay" de Rome, dans la catégorie meilleur pilote de série. C'était assez inattendu. Le projet est toujours en développement, le concept évolue et Sylvain réalise en ce moment un second pilote de 11 minutes cette fois. Et c'est une toute autre paire de manches!

The mini-pilot of Sylvain Marc's TV series project for Cartoon Network just won the Pulcinella award at the "Cartoons on the bay" festival in Rome, in best TV pilot category. And that was quite unexpected. The project is still in further development, the concept evolves and Sylvain is boarding an 11 minutes pilot now. And this is a whole new challenge for him !

-How did you get the sketch book ?

Paul Felix art director from Disney handed it to me.

-What do you think about this collective project?
Is very exciting to see all these wonderful artists collaborate on a book, is really wonderful going through the book, is very inspiring.

-Who did you give you the scketchbook and whom did you give it then?
I got the sketchbook from Paul Felix and I handed it to Glen Keane so I was sandwiched by two masters

-What technique did you use?
Gouache, it was scary to start because there was art behind my page and to the right side...very scary

-Did you have already and idea of what you would draw in it?
I wanted to have like a 50's inspired postcard from Los Angeles

-Who(in the contributors) would you like to work with in the future?
That's a tough one!!! There were so many good ones!!! I can't choose!

-What are your news (signatures, upcoming books, movie or else)?
I'm working on the Next 3d film at disney but can't announce yet :( But I worked a bit on Visual development for Tangled and Winnie the Pooh And personal projects on the side that always feel eternal to get done!

Carter Goodrich is one of the most talented character designer ("Despicable Me","Ratatouille", "The Prince of Egypt", "Open Season", "Monster,Inc" , "Finding nemo"to name a few). He is also a children book artist (I suggest you to get this and this) and the incontrovertible New-Yorker cover artist (write his name in this page and check all his covers).

As you may know, co-founder of Sketchtravel : Daisuke Tsutsumi is also Artistic director at Pixar animation studio on Toy Story 3 (He is also a comic book artist, an outdoor painter, an illustrator, a collective organizer, a...he can do everything). Many people constantly ask about this expected movie and I am happy to show you some pictures from the color script Daisuke created.

Which means printing is going to be a higher challenge :-) This sketchbook is really the luckiest ever and an unique book with now a pop-up pic in it !

Hello Mike, How did you get the sketch book?

There was a bit of a mixup in the beginning. I first received the book from Vincent Nguyen, but they knew I take many grueling hours with my pieces so we figured Peter Nguyen should work his inking magic first.

-What do you think about this collective project?

There are so many inspiring and positive ideas encapsulated between the red bindings. To me, the most appealing thing about this project is that we all in part have given a moment of our lives to create this time capsule. Each image able to reflect who we were as artists and how much of ourselves we chose or were able to give.

-Who gave you the sketchbook and whom did you give it then?

I received the book from Peter Nguyen and I gave it to Vince who then handed it off to Katsuya Terada in Japan.

-What technique did you use?

I use TomBow Mono Graphite Pencils: 5H - 6B. But the 2 most crucial tools are my kneeded erasers and my favorite, the all powerful Sakura Electric Eraser. (it does wonders)

-Did you have already and idea of what you would draw in it?

To be quite frank I was scared out of my wits, but after bringing it home and seeing all the breathtaking drawings and paintings ideas just started to flow.

-Who(in the contributors) would you like to work with in the future?

I've had the greatest privilege of working with several of the the artists already over at Blue Sky. Unfortunately when I first started Dice Tsutsumi had just left for Pixar so I never got a chance to work with him. His sensitivity to light, composition, color, and value is something i've looked up to for quite a while. Hopefully someday I'll have the chance to work and learn from him.

-What are your news (signatures, upcoming books, movie or else)?

I recently finished working on the third saga of "Ice Age." On the side I'm working with Gerald Guerlais and many other fantastic artists for the next Rendezvous book as well as some personal projects.
